Vehicle based cover

Our standard breakdown service. Your vehicle is covered regardless of who is driving it. You can add vehicle based breakdown cover to your existing Norwich Union Car Insurance policy; simply log in to our self service facility.

Personal cover

You are covered in any car in which you're travelling, whether you're the driver or a passenger.

Joint personal cover

This extends personal cover so that you and another named member of your household both benefit from the same level of breakdown cover, whether driver or passenger in any car.

If your car breaks down more than ¼ mile from your home address we will send a patrol van out to repair it at the roadside. If it cannot be repaired within a reasonable time, we will transport you and your car to a nearby destination of your choice or to the nearest garage.

In addition to the cover detailed under Rescue, Recovery includes the following feature:

If you become ill whilst driving (provided that you are more than ¼ mile from your home address) and you are unable to continue, and none of your passengers can legally drive your car, we will arrange transport for you and up to seven passengers to any one address anywhere in the United Kingdom.

Norwich Union breakdown cover: Onward travel... read more

In addition to the cover detailed under Rescue, Recovery and At Home, Onward Travel entitles you to one of the following extra benefits if we cannot get your vehicle repaired locally or if you become medically unfit to drive during the course of your journey:

• Replacement hire car for 24 hours, and insurance including damage waiver
• Alternative transport for you and up to 7 passengers to your final destination.
• Hotel accommodation - one night's bed and breakfast for up to 8 people in a hotel of our choice.
• Special medical assistance - if you or one of your passengers is taken into hospital we pay for overnight accommodation for the other passengers.

Our services in Europe

Norwich Union breakdown cover: European

Whichever UK breakdown cover option you choose, for an additional fee you can extend it to cover driving in Europe. This cover includes:

• Spare parts dispatch if they are required to repair your car whilst abroad
• Extra accommodation expenses for one night if you are stranded following a breakdown
• Journey continuation or return home: either 4 days additional accommodation, or up to 14 days car hire, if your car cannot be repaired immediately
• Replacement driver if you and your passengers are too ill to continue driving (must be certified by a doctor)
• Vehicle break-in - we will pay for repairs to make your car secure again following a break-in or attempted break-in whilst abroad
• Returning your car to the UK if it cannot be repaired

As part of our European breakdown cover, we also include a number of features which apply after you return home to the United Kingdom:

• Travel expenses to collect your vehicle that has been left abroad for repair
• Replacement vehicle after you return: we will pay up to £250 for self-drive car hire, including collision-damage waiver
