What's protected no claims discount?

The answer

It’s a way of keeping your no claim discount (NCD) even when you have to make a claim. Protected no claim discount is available for customers with 3 or more years earned NCD and who haven’t had any claims in the last 5 years as follows:

If you have 3 years earned no claim discount, protected no claims discount allows you to have one at fault claim before your no claim discount is affected.
If you have 4 or more years earned NCD, protected NCD allows you to have up to 2 at fault claims in a 3 year period before you lose any NCD.

Certain types of claims won't affect your no claims discount at all:

Emergency medical treatment
Glass repair or replacement, including scratches on the bodywork from the broken glass

Protected no claim discount - 3 years	I have made 1 claim during my period of insurance	Your no claim discount will remain at 3 years but protection against further claims will be lost
	I have made 2 claims during my period of insurance	Your no claim discount will be reduced by 2 years on our no claim discount scale and the protection will be lost
	I have made 3 or more claims during my period of insurance	You will lose all your no claim discoun along with the protection
Protected no claim discount - 4 years or more	I have made 1 claim during any 3 year period	Your no claim discount will remain at the maximum level
	I have made 2 claims during any 3 year period	Your no claim discount will remain at the maximum level but protection against further claims during the period will be lost
	I have made 3 claims during any 3 year period	Your no claim discount will be reduced by 2 years on our no claim discount scale and protection will be lost
	I have made more than 3 claims during any 3 year period	You will lose all your no claim discount along with the protection
