What is my child covered for if I take out this policy?

We will pay a lump sum if your child should become permanently disabled or die as the result of an accident. There is also a payment if your child needs surgery under general anaesthetic and spends 48 hours or more in hospital as the result of an accident. Disablement, death and hospitalisation due to illness or natural causes are not covered. We also offer help lines for general family welfare and legal advice.

How much does this cover cost?

£1.99 per month for each child. This is currently the only cover level available and there are no plans to change this at present. However, we would notify our policyholders if this position were to change.

What would happen to the policy if I died before my children reached the age of 18?

The surviving parent or appointed guardian would be able to take on the policy if they wished.

When does the cover start?

Provided you have given us valid bank details from which we will be able to collect your premiums, your child/children's cover is in force from the next working day, following the submission of your application.

How long does Tots to Teens run for? Can I cancel the policy?

The policy can run for each child until the end of the month before their 18th birthday, or until they start full time employment if that is earlier. You can cancel it at any time before then by contacting us and cancelling the Direct Debit at your bank.

Do I get any money back if I cancel the policy?

If your policy is cancelled within the first 14 days and a premium has been paid, this premium will be refunded to you. If you cancel the policy later on, there is no surrender value and no money is due to you as this insurance is a protection product and not an investment product.

When will I receive my free gift(s)?

Your policy documents and gift will be sent to you within 5 working days, after we receive your application.

How will I know the help line numbers to call?

These will be printed on your policy document when you receive it. The advice given on the helpline is free but you will be charged for the cost of the call.

Who will get the money if there is a claim?

For children up to the age of 16 the money would be paid to you (or your legal representative). From 16 onwards, the money would be paid to the insured child (or their legal representative).

Can the money be paid into a trust?

Please see answer above but if arrangements have been made to pay the proceeds into a trust we will do our best to honour this. Our policy wording states we will not be bound by any trust, charge or transfer. At the time of a claim, we would rely on the advice of our lawyers as to whether we could comply with your wishes.

Can I/my partner/wife/husband be covered?

No, not on this policy, but we do have a range of policies for adults - Accidental Death Benefit, Accidental Disability Insurance, Hospital Cash Plan and Family Personal Accident Plan.

Can my stepchildren/grandchildren be covered?

Yes, provided you are their legal guardian.

I am divorced and my children live with their father/mother. Can I insure them on this policy?

Yes, provided you are their parent or legal guardian.

I have a children's personal accident policy with another company. If I take out your policy as well, will both pay out?

At Norwich Union Direct, we will pay out regardless of any similar insurance policies you hold. However, we suggest you also check with your other insurer as their terms and conditions may be different.
